Girl Guide Wins 2014 How Now Stakes

September 20th, 2014

Classy mare Girl Guide has completed a perfectly-timed run at Caulfield Racecourse this afternoon, charging home to pip A Time For Julia on the line in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m); Shamal Wind finishing a close third.

Jumping from the gates only fairly the Churchill Downs mare quickly recovered and worked towards the front of the pack, settling in third position behind Spirits Dance and A Time For Julia upon reaching the bend.

Finding the final straight with a clear line, Girl Guide locked in a sprint battle with her two closest rivals but appeared to be unable to catch Peter Moody’s talented mare; a photo on the line revealing the five-year-old had won with an ideal bob of the head.

Trainer David Hayes was understandable pleased with Girl Guide’s How Now Stakes victory, complimenting her ability to win from a tough racing position.

“That’s very important to the filly – she’s Gregers’ sister who picked up Black Type, beat a great filed and did it the hard way,” Hayes said following the race.

“We raced three wide without cover, tackled all the way down the straight and stuck the neck out, it was a very, very good tough win.”

Jockey Craig Williams delivered an exceptional ride on Girl Guide in the 2014 How Now Stakes and was quick to compliment Girl Guide’s poise during running.

“She actually beat the same horse her sister beat the time before which was great,” Williams said following the How Now Stakes.

“They didn’t go a gallop at all – we just thought we’d be simple, follow A Time For Julia, she’d give us a good lead, they went slow and really sprinted at the 500m.

“David and Tom Dabernig had a big day today, they were very bullish about her, I did need to be tough late and she was.” is offering the best odds on all races remaining around the country today.
